A HERO FOR ALL: Nelson Mandela's Farewell
(1999) 60 min.
What makes a hero? This film explores that question as it chronicles Nelson Mandela's 1998 farewell tour through the United States and Canada before he stepped down as President of South Africa. It follows him to White House and Congress where he was feted by many who never supported his struggle for freedom.
The film also deals with the tense personal life of Mr. Mandela, including his painful divorce from Winnie Mandela and his marriage late in life to Graca Machel, whose own husband, the president of neighboring Mozambique, was assassinated under mysterious circumstances.
The film reflects on how Nelson Mandela became a global celebrity and hero through his message of reconciliation and healing.
